Draw distance is a phenomenon in game rendering that deals with perspectives. Drawn Distant is a style perspective on gaming.
Over my time as Strategy Director & Gaming Editor at Highsnobiety, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing a rounded view on how luxury, fashion and lifestyle brands have made their way into gaming. This amalgamated into thought leadership pieces such as “Select Your Character: Gamified Luxury” and connections with leaders such as Virgil Abloh and Jeff Staple and brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
While the last few years have been huge in terms of brand investments into gaming - from building experiences in Fortnite and Roblox to partnering with eSports teams - I’ve felt that the approach to gaming by luxury, fashion and lifestyle brands always followed a similar template (with the exception of forward thinking brands like Gucci that take this to another level).
When Loewe debuted their SS23 collection something changed for me. The most talked about garments from Jonathan Anderson’s show were the “pixelated clothes.” While the connection to gaming was clear, the execution was much more subtle. It wasn’t a Minecraft collaboration (even though many mistakingly said it was) - it was just a clever tip of the hat to the gaming community, through something that felt very Loewe.
This Substack seeks to act as a breeding ground for such ideas. It will look into the relevance of archive games, iconic soundtracks and other phenomena in gaming that provide inspiration for luxury, fashion and lifestyle brands looking to enter the space. Of course, when it makes sense, it will also look at bigger games (i.e. Fortnite, Roblox, Triple A Titles) and provide a style perspective on those.
A lot of shorter cultural content will be made available for free, while bigger pieces around industry thought leadership will be for paid subscribers.
Love, DD.
